Understanding Basic Lawn Care Practices

Grass is a natural recreational surface that is superior to concrete in many ways. Grass also helps purify the air and moderate temperatures. As a homeowner, a well-maintained lawn can be your source of pride since it improves the aesthetics of your landscape. Here are some lawn care practices you should consider.

Improve Drainage

Lawns with poor drainage get waterlogged for hours and can affect the overall health of your lawn if not addressed. The leading causes for water buildup are the garden's landscape and the soil's inability to absorb water.

The shape of your garden should divert water from the house. If your garden has dips, water will pool in one place, which can destroy the grass and roots. To prevent waterlogging, install gutters and drains to drive excess rainfall water away from your lawn. Additional ways of improving the drainage include planting wet plants that use a lot of water and adjusting the gradient of your lawn.

High amounts of clay in the soil, layers of roots, and thatch are some reasons the soil in your lawn has a poor absorption capacity. Aeration can improve water flow and minimize surface buildup. Another alternative is to change the soil. You can adjust the soil by using organic materials.

Weed Control

Weed control is an essential part of lawn care. The two common types of weed control measures are pre-emergent and post-emergent weed control. Pre-emergent herbicides kill germinating weeds by preventing cell division in their root system. Post-emergent herbicides control weeds that have already germinated. This herbicide travels down to the roots to kill the weed.

You can also control weeds naturally by improving the soil and planting local grass. Correcting drainage issues, watering deeply, and mowing often are some other ways you can prevent the growth of weeds without using synthetic herbicides.

Feed Your Lawn

Lawn maintenance involves feeding your lawn. Experts recommend fertilizing your lawn a few times a year. Invest in a fertilizer that has micronutrients such as iron, copper, and sulfur. It is also recommended that you apply lime every few years.

Since watering and fertilizing make the soil acidic, lime stabilizes the soil's pH and restores essential minerals like magnesium and calcium. In areas where the soils are alkaline, there is no need for lime. Before applying lime, you should ask a lawn expert to test the pH of your soil.

In Conclusion

Lawn care sets apart a lash green lawn from a garden infested with weeds and unhealthy grass. Your lawn is the face of your home and should be cared for regularly. If you are unsure about the best ways to care for your lawn, schedule an appointment with a lawn care expert for professional advice and instructions.
